OUR MISSION
Our mission is to advance multi-dimensional solutions to the effects of incarceration. A New Way of Life Reentry Project provides housing, case management, pro bono legal services, advocacy, and leadership development for women rebuilding their lives after prison. We envision a world where every person can make decisions for his/her own life, is accountable for those decisions, and is valued as a contributing member of the community.
Since 1998:
1,000+
women and children have found safety and support in our reentry homes
300+
women have been reunited with their children
Since 2007 our legal department has provided pro bono services to assist thousands seeking relief from the burden of criminal histories.
About A New Way of Life
A New Way of Life Reentry Project was founded by Susan Burton. After returning home from her sixth term in prison, Susan Burton was done—exhausted by the revolving door of incarceration and disappointed in the way her life had turned out. In 1997, she entered treatment and began the process of turning her life around. Once out, she began meeting women at the Los Angeles Bus Station as they returned from prison, welcoming them into her home, and soon after, A New Way of Life Reentry Project was born.
We believe that storytelling is a powerful tool to open windows into the lived experiences of marginalized people whose voices often go unheard. Through Testif-i, formerly incarcerated women and their children share their truth, trauma and triumph, helping to heal their own pain while sparking awareness at the same time.
